CHOPS Feasibility

The Industry Challenge:

Canada has demonstrated the ability to economically produce heavy oil using a non-thermal method referred to as Cold Heavy Oil Production with Sand (CHOPS).

Operators from around the world are interested in using CHOPS to develop their heavy oil reservoirs; however, they do not have sufficient expertise in this recovery technique to determine if it is feasible.

How We Help:

C-FER can review the reservoir characteristics of a heavy oil reservoir to determine if it is feasible to apply the CHOPS process.

Reservoir process modeling by C-FER’s parent company, Alberta Innovates ‑ Technology Futures, is used to determine if economic oil production rates are possible.

The review includes evaluating potential well designs and artificial lift systems that would be required to implement a CHOPS process.
