Geothermal

This year, C-FER will be presenting a paper entitled, An Introduction to Flow Control Devices and the Potential Benefits to Geothermal Applications.

Geothermal operators face several significant challenges in creating and maintaining optimal production from their wells. One of these challenges is the uniform distribution of both injected and produced fluid to and from the reservoir. Preferential production of fluid from one zone of a reservoir can result in thermal drawdown, reducing the...

The need for a robust pumping system capable of operating in the challenging conditions presented in geothermal production wells has been identified as a critical piece of equipment for the advancement of geothermal energy utilization. In typical geothermal operations, establishing and maintaining a high production rate at high temperatures is critical to the economic viability of the project. Electrical Submersible Pumps (ESPs) have significant advantages over other commonly used pumping...

Workshop Overview:

This workshop provides an overview of the considerations, key factors, industry guidelines and practices, examples, and field experience related to the design and integrity of geothermal wells.

The workshop content was developed based on C-FER’s extensive experience with thermal well design and integrity topics associated with the heavy oil and bitumen recovery methods of Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) and Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS). While the majority of the...

C-FER is proud to be a sponsor of the 2018 SMU Power Plays Conference.

C-FER will be hosting a post-conference workshop on Thermal Well Design & Integrity for Geothermal Applications. This course provides an overview of the considerations, key factors, industry guidelines and practices, examples, and field experience related to the design and integrity of geothermal wells.

The course content was developed based on C-FER’s extensive experience with thermal well design and integrity topics...

The Industry Challenge:

A major geothermal operator was experiencing issues with calcium carbonate scaling in their production wells.  The cause was mainly attributed to the well-known pH effects related to CO2 solubility during production, resulting precipitation of calcium carbonate.

The operator was generally satisfied with the performance of their chosen chemical scale inhibitor; however, the injection system had two main drawbacks:

  1. if the capillary injection lines became plugged, corroded...

C-FER Technologies is pleased to be featured in the Journal of Petroleum Technology on how heavy-oil technologies can be applied to the Geothermal Industry.

Article highlights include how C-FER is helping to take technologies such as steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and applying them to the geothermal industry. The article covers how the application of heavy oil technologies to the geothermal industry can benefit both heavy oil operators and the geothermal industry, and help to reduce the...

C-FER Technologies is not only helping the energy industry qualify new technologies in areas such as in-ground leak detection but is exploring how the geothermal industry can benefit from technology developed for the oil and gas industry.

Read more about this research in the January 2017 issue of Alberta Oil Magazine.

The Industry Challenge:

Geothermal operations face many of the same challenges as the oil and gas industry in developing and maintaining producing wells.  As the geothermal industry expands the existing hydrothermal base to include more difficult reservoirs and commercializes enhanced geothermal system (EGS) resources, it becomes imperative to address technical challenges to new well development such as:

  • Reduced drilling and completion costs;
  • Reliable high-temperature completion equipment;
  • Ther...

C-FER is please to be exhibiting in the 40th GRC Annual Meeting & GEA Geothermal Energy Expo in Sacramento, CA. Visit us at booth 114/116.

C-FER Technologies works with operating companies in the energy industry to push the limits of current engineering constraints to improve performance in existing assets, and to develop challenging new resources.

Using applied research and development, and the latest analysis methods and testing systems, C-FER is helping operators:

  • Optimize their operations...
