The Industry Challenge:
Flexible risers, umbilicals and other equipment that connect floating platforms and ships to facilities on the sea bed are subjected to continuous cycling loads caused by wave action on the floating structure.
The multi-layer, multi-component design of this equipment makes it difficult to model the response to the complex loading environment, making full-scale qualification testing necessary to verify the equipment performance under the range of potential operating environments.
Field tests are very expensive and in-house testing capabilities of the vendor’s may not be able to accurately simulate the full range of operating conditions required.
