ESP Design & Assessment for Deviated Wells

The Industry Challenge:

Operators were concerned that long artificial lift systems such as Electric Submersible Pumps (ESP) would be damaged during installation in short radius horizontal wells typical of SAGD operations and other wells with high dogleg severity.

They were also concerned that pumps installed in the build section of the well could be damaged during operation due to curvature of the pump.

How We Help:

C-FER built a finite element model of the pumping systems to evaluate the local bending that occurs in an ESP system during installation and validated the model through a series of full-scale bend tests on pumping systems.

The pump bending model was developed into a new software package ESPBendTM that helps operators assess the amount of bending that could be imposed on specific ESP system configuration given a specific well trajectory.

Operators can then select pump configurations and pump landing locations to minimize bending of the pumping system.
